today I screamed...
...and it didn't feel so good.
I made a tax mistake two years ago. I didn't sign my form, so the SDA&T sent my check back with a note. I never saw it because it got filed away in my tax receipts from 2006.
I got a notice that I didn't pay my personal property tax. But I knew I had, so I scoured my files and found an unopened letter that contained the form, a check, and a note that it was returned.
So I sent it right away with a lovely note pleading stupidity but not criminal intent. I wrote a new check, attached it to the memo, and sent the old notice, the old filled-out form, and the old check back to SDA&T.
Today, I got a new notice, my old form, and my old check back. The notice said that I had failed to pay my $300 filing fee.
But I had! It was in the envelope with my letter, which they didn't return.
I called the SDA&T on the phone. Usually they answer, "Yeah?" Today someone answered with her name. I explained the situation, and she said she'd look on her desk for a loose check. None. But if a loose check were discovered, they'd return it.
I hung up and screamed at the top of my lungs. It didn't feel good, like it usually does to do that rebel yell. No, it just felt futile.
Like nearly everything else.

Although I find this frustrating as well, sometimes I enjoy a good fight with a middle manager, you know... the person who gets on when you say, "Let me talk to your supervisor, please."
