Goat: Reprise

This is my e-nouncement for my poetry reading (with Alan Reese, Dancing Shadow Review) this Sunday, 4:00, at Minas. Unfortunately, poetry readings are not well-attended, even by poets. Same applies to the whole poetry industry; that is, publications that showcase any kind of creative writing (fiction, nonfiction, poetry) are usually purchased by writers—and only a handful, at that—rather than people who enjoy reading. Often, writers want their work in a journal, but they've never bothered to take a gander at the thing, much less buy a copy. Though I, too, am guilty to the extent that my budget doesn't afford much (especially with contest entry fees), I still have several shelves full of works by poets, local and famous, and literary magazines from all over the country.

"Goat" is not my best poem. But I like it as I like goats. It reflects the ideas one might truly share with such a sensitive creature as a goat. The eyes are fixed to appear to care. A goat, like a poem, needs your love.

Sometimes either might even admit it.

Good luck with the reading. I hope it's amazing, surprisingly, shockingly well attended. And happy, happy, happy belated birthday!!!

I so LOVE goats! I got into trouble once when I was about 13; we went to a farm for a school project and the farmer caught me kissing one of his "kids". He freaked!!

I also love this poem. I'm not going to say it isn't one of your best.....I think it's great!

Good luck, doggie, and here's my take on the attendance......I'd rather have a few around who adore me than a throng who are apathetic. Talk about energy suckers......

xoxo

Y'know, if you want people to come to your readings, you might give them more notice.

(Not that it would've helped one way or the other ... have to work all day).

Good luck!

Snay, ha. I have already posted the event (3 weeks ago) on Craigslist. I think it's been in City Paper. It's on the poetry forum. And it's gone out in e-mails.

I posted it in my blog when I discovered that all my "friends," who have known about this for two months, suddenly have other things to do. :(

But this is the way with friends. Or "friends."

I hope I don't ask too much—a birthday (under-attended) to celebrate cake, not me, and a reading once a year. I had an art opening once, too. Lots of people who lived within .5 mile from the opening couldn't make it.

If it were one friend with lots of excuses, I'd ditch the friend. But now I'm getting to the point of wondering how to ditch me.
